Have you ever wondered about the Holy Spirit? If you look up references to him in the bible, there are many mentions of the Holy Spirit. So, why do we hear so little about him? It seems to be easier to have a relationship with God or Jesus than with the Holy Spirit. But since he is the one who actually dwells within us and is always here with us, maybe we should start acknowledging him more.
When Jesus was explaining to the disciples that He was leaving them, he said this to them in John 14:16-17 "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. That helper is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it does not see or know him. You know him, because he lives with you and will be in you."
Then in John 14:25-26, Jesus said "I have told you this while I am still with you. However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you." I don't know about you, but I want to get to know the one whom is sent by the Father that can teach me and remind me of what Jesus has said.
In Isaiah 11:2, "The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him-the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord." Do we as Christians not want this? Wisdom, counsel, knowledge and fear of the Lord? I believe we can ask these things of the Holy Spirit and he will give them to us.
Acts 1:8 says this about the Holy Spirit "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the the earth." I want power! I want to be a witness for Christ.
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free." Luke 4:18. And, yes, I want to be used by God for His glory, seeing His people set free and healed. This is why I am forming a close relationship with the Holy Spirit. I talk to him and ask him for comfort, wisdom and guidance when I need them.
If you never have, I encourage you to speak to him. Just say "Holy Spirit, come. Show yourself to me. Give me what you have for me and help me be what God has called me to be."
Reach out to the Holy Spirit on a personal level. Speak to him directly and see how that begins to change your relationship with the Lord. You might be surprised.
Here is a book that I really enjoyed and that gave me a new perspective about relationship with the Holy Spirit.
