Did you ever see the 1993 movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray? In the movie, Bill Murray's character, Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman is on assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day Event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He suddenly finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day over and over again.
In his frustration, after living through the same things day after day, Phil decides to take advantage of the situation because he has no fear of long-term consequences. He learns secrets about the town residents and uses his knowledge to seduce women, steal, and behave recklessly. He eventually ends up depressed and tries to commit suicide numerous times, but that does not end the time loop he is trapped in, so after kidnapping the groundhog he drives off a cliff killing them both. But once again, he wakes up the next day again on February 2nd.
Phil finally decides to use his knowledge to better himself and help the people around him.
He is able to befriend almost everyone he meets during the day, using his experiences to save lives, to help townspeople, and ultimately to impress Rita, the woman he has tried to impress all along, without having to resort to manipulation as on previous days. He wakes up the next morning and finds the time loop is broken; it is now February 3 and Rita is still with him. They walk outside and Phil proposes that they move to Punxsutawney together.
I have found myself going through some of the same things in my life over and over. I spent many days wondering why as I looked outwardly for answers and justification as I made choices that were not healthy for me. Rather than blame our circumstances and the actions of others for what we are going through, at some point, we must look inwardly and ask ourselves why we do the things we do and why do we allow others to affect our lives negatively.
If nothing changes, nothing changes....as Phil found out, until he made some changes in his attitude, started bettering himself and treating others well, nothing changed. Maybe we can learn something from this arrogant weatherman....and from Moses. After wandering in the wilderness for forty years, the Lord told Moses "you have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north." Deut. 2:3 Sometimes, we just have to stop and turn away from whatever it is that has kept us going in circles for so long. I know that it can be very difficult to do, but if nothing changes....nothing changes.
Deut. 2:7 "For the LORD your God has blessed you in all that you have done; He has known your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing."
Perhaps now is the time to move on. It has been hard and dry and at times you have felt alone, and even like you might die from the pain, but God has never left you. Ask for courage and strength to make the changes necessary for yourself, and He will give it to you. Blessings are yours - take them.
